Sylvia Lieberman's success is having finally had her children's book, Archibald's Swiss Cheese Mountain, published. - and this year it actually happened!.
I have long been devoted to nurturing and educating
children. As a mother, I was a leader of Brownie and Girl Scout troops, class mother and PTA president. A perpetual student, I've taken courses in such subjects as children's literature, journalism, voice-over, script writing, Japanese sumi painting, fashion writing and film. Even when I worked during the day, and donated time to charities, I continued my education. After raising my daughter, media psychiatrist, Dr. Carole Lieberman, I was a docent in the Museum of Natural History and a volunteer at the Y, because I love teaching
children about the world.
My success is having finally had my children's book,
Archibald's Swiss Cheese Mountain, published. It has long been my dream to see my story about Archibald Mouse on bookshelves in major bookstores - and this year it actually happened!
Sylvia Lieberman - Archibald Mouse
I was thrilled! Not only is my book in bookstores, but I have been doing readings and
signings, and I've been in the Hollywood Santa Parade with my granddaughter in the costume of Archibald, and my daughter holding up the book! On top of all of this, Archibald's Swiss Cheese Mountain has won the Hollywood Book Festival award for Best Children's Book of 2008! Best of all, I am able to donate a portion of the proceeds to Feed The Children and Variety: The Children's Charity. I feel like I'm walking in a dream! This is especially true because of its tragic beginnings.
I wrote Archibald's Swiss Cheese Mountain when I was taking a course in Writing for the Juvenile Reader. The teacher wrote on the top of my manuscript, "This is publishable material, see me after class." I did, and she gave me the names of publishers to send it to. But, just then my father died and the manuscript went into a drawer, never to
see the light of day until I brought it out to read to my granddaughter. Years later, my daughter and granddaughter started trying to find a publisher for it. My hopes were dashed many times when agents and publishers seemed to love the book, but nothing came of it, often for frustrating reasons like they had just done a "mouse book." But,finally Archie landed in the hands of a fabulous publisher named Seven Locks Press. Then the publisher found an illustrator who captured the persona of Archie perfectly. And so the book was finally born!
I'm no spring chicken, so my hopes were all but dashed that this would come to pass in my lifetime. But now that it did, the story of Archibald Mouse parallels my own.
Archibald teaches children how to reach their big dreams, just like I finally did!
