Teresa Molter - Teacher / Educator
My name is Teresa Molter.
I am originally from Buffalo, NY and now call Cary, NC home.
What’s my success story?
Well, everyone out there has had successes along the path of life, but identifying your biggest success isn’t always easy as one may think. I have been an educator for 15 years. I have always thought of myself as “just a teacher”. But throughout the years, I realized I have helped shape the lives of many of my students. My success has come from the gift I have been given to make a difference in the lives of young adults.
As a high school math teacher, many students come in with pre-established opinion about math and their ability to succeed. I realized that my job is not only to teach the math so they can master the concepts (and pass the tests!), but to teach kids how to look within themselves to be the best they can be. I have been given an awesome responsibility, you have entrusted me with your child’s education. I can build their confidence and self-esteem, or belittle them for not having their homework done, not remembering their calculator, not performing to their ability level, etc. If I can teach them the skills necessary to be a well rounded individual who can look within themselves for answers, I have done my job ~ I have been successful.
In the education profession, there are teachers in the traditional sense as they teach the curriculum they are told to teach and there are individuals who desire is to help change the lives of each student they encounter by empowering them with the tools needed for life long learning. I’m the latter. I had an administrator once tell me that I couldn’t teach kids skills to be leaders or ways to be effective communicators . . . I was given a certain curriculum and that’s all I could teach. For years, people have told me, “You can’t save them all, you can only do so much. Worry about the kids who want to do well.” or, “Since *Joe Schmo* can’t pass anyway, let him sleep in the back of the room as long as he doesn’t bother anyone”. But don’t you want me to try to bring out the best in every child that walks through my door as he/she may be your child? Don’t you want me to instill the qualities of effective communicators and leaders? This is how I’ve been a successful educator.
What’s the point of all this? I have realized that I have much more to offer children than just math. My success story is real. I have passion; passion in providing skills for teens that will enhance their life. I took a very big leap of faith. After 15 years in public education, I have recently resigned from the public schools. Why, you might ask? . . . because now I’m truly successful. I realize that if you follow your passion, you will gain nothing but success. I am using the experiences from my career to decide what these young adults need to know to be successful in the largest school out there ~ LIFE!
